Deadly back-to-back earthquakes strike Venezuela
Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela within seconds of each other on Wednesday evening (June 24), causing significant damage in the capital Caracas and raising fears of heavy casualties.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a 7.2-magnitude earthquake first hit near San Felipe, followed just 39 seconds later by a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake near Yumare. Both epicentres were located west of Caracas.
The powerful tremors were felt across large parts of the country, with several buildings reportedly collapsing in Caracas.
Videos circulating on social media showed damaged structures and residents rushing into the streets in panic.
A tsunami warning was briefly issued after the earthquakes but was later withdrawn. Authorities have not yet released an official casualty figure, while rescue operations remain underway.
The USGS warned that the twin earthquakes could cause extensive damage and significant loss of life due to their strength and shallow depth.
Caracas airport operations, rail services and educational activities were temporarily suspended as emergency responders assessed the scale of the disaster.
