Delhi protests spread across India, ban on gatherings in Mumbai

The protests in India's capital over the medical entrance exam paper leak have now spread to Mumbai. In response, authorities in Mumbai have imposed a ban on public gatherings, which will remain in effect until August 6.

The ban takes effect from Thursday (July 23), according to NDTV.

Under this order, no five or more people will be allowed to gather without permission in Mumbai until August 6.

NDTV reported that the measure was taken considering the recent student protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

Eight FIRs have been filed against 900 people in Mumbai for holding protests in solidarity with the Delhi agitators.

The protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar over the medical entrance exam paper leak are intensifying. The movement, under the banner of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), is demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. As he has not resigned, the agitation continues to gain momentum.

In this context, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a new announcement this morning. He said those involved in the paper leak will be brought to trial in fast-track courts.

In a Facebook post, Modi wrote, "Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth! A decision has been taken to set up fast-track courts to ensure quick and strict punishment for those involved in the paper leak. Concerned authorities and officials have been directed to take all necessary steps in this regard. This is part of the government's continued efforts to protect the interests of students."

He added, "Those who try to harm the future of our youth will not be spared in any way."
