Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, occupied the top spot in the list of cities around the world with the worst air quality on Friday morning. The air in Dhaka city was classified as ‘hazardous’ with an AQI score of 323 at 9:30 am. Pakistan’s Lahore, and India’s Kolkata and Delhi occupied the second, third, and fourth spots in the list, with AQI scores of 306, 284, and 216, respectively. An AQI between 151 and 200 is considered "unhealthy," 201 and 300 "very unhealthy," and 301 to 400 is considered "hazardous," posing serious health risks to residents. The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them.

বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে দূষিত বাতাসের শহরের তালিকায় আজ শুক্রবার (২৪ নভেম্বর) শীর্ষস্থান দখল করেছে ঢাকা। সকাল সাড়ে ৯টায় এয়ার কোয়ালিটি ইনডেক্স (একিউআই) ৩২৩ স্কোর নিয়ে ঢাকার বাতাস 'বিপজ্জনক' অঞ্চলে রয়েছে। এই প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ করেছে আইকিউএয়ার। পাকিস্তানের লাহোর এবং ভারতের কলকাতা ও দিল্লি যথাক্রমে ৩০৬, ২৮৪ এবং ২১৬ একিউআই স্কোর নিয়ে তালিকার দ্বিতীয়, তৃতীয় এবং চতুর্থ স্থানে রয়েছে। বাংলাদেশে একিউআই নির্ধারণ করা হয় দূষণের পাঁচটি বৈশিষ্ট্যের ওপর ভিত্তি করে। সেগুলো হলো- বস্তুকণা (পিএম১০ ও পিএম২.৫), এনও২, সিও, এসও২ এবং ওজোন (ও৩)। দীর্ঘদিন ধরে বায়ু দূষণে ভুগছে ঢাকা। এর বাতাসের গুণমান সাধারণত শীতকালে অস্বাস্থ্যকর হয়ে যায় এবং বর্ষাকালে কিছুটা উন্নত হয়। ২০১৯ সালের মার্চ মাসে পরিবেশ অধিদপ্তর ও বিশ্বব্যাংকের একটি প্রতিবেদনে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে যে, ঢাকার বায়ু দূষণের তিনটি প্রধান উৎস হলো ইটভাটা, যানবাহনের ধোঁয়া ও নির্মাণ সাইটের ধুলো।
