Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has requested Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister to ensure the safe passage of the Bangladesh-flagged vessel 'Banglar Joyjatra' through the Strait of Hormuz.

The request was made during a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Türkiye, according to officials.

During the meeting, held on Sunday (April 19), both sides discussed the evolving situation in the Gulf region as well as issues of mutual interest.

Dr. Rahman reiterated Bangladesh’s consistent and balanced position on regional developments, urging all parties to exercise restraint and resolve differences through dialogue and diplomacy.

The Iranian side appreciated Bangladesh’s constructive stance and expressed hope for a future visit by the Bangladeshi foreign minister to Tehran.

Dr. Rahman noted that Bangladesh had previously appreciated Iran’s decision to allow ships from select countries, including Bangladesh, to pass through the strategic waterway.

In response, the Iranian deputy foreign minister assured that relevant authorities had been instructed to take necessary measures, while acknowledging the tense regional situation.

Earlier on April 5, Bangladesh’s foreign minister had raised similar concerns with the Iranian ambassador in Dhaka, requesting safe passage for 'Banglar Joyjatra' as well as another oil-carrying vessel bound for Bangladesh. The Iranian envoy had then assured continued coordination with relevant authorities.

Iran also appreciated Bangladesh’s balanced diplomatic stance and expressed gratitude for its condolence resolution following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
