Nine years have passed since Bangladesh lost one of its greatest film stars, Nayak Raj Rajjak. The legendary actor died of a heart attack on August 21, 2017, at the age of 75, leaving behind a cinematic legacy that continues to captivate generations.

Born in Kolkata, Rajjak stepped into the world of acting through stage theatre while still in seventh grade. He moved to then-East Pakistan with his family in 1964, carrying little more than a dream of building a life in the world of cinema. Years of struggle followed before he finally emerged as one of the defining stars of Bangladeshi film.

His journey on the big screen began in 1966 with a small role in '13 Number Feku Ostagar Lane'. The same year, his portrayal of Lakhindar in Zahir Raihan’s 'Behula' changed the course of his career. Audiences quickly embraced the young actor, and Rajjak soon became a household name.

Then came a remarkable run of films that turned him into an icon. From 'Jibon Thekey Neya', 'Rangbaaz' and 'Ora 11 Jon' to 'Oshikkhito', 'Alor Michil', 'Chhutir Ghonta' and 'Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo', Rajjak gave life to characters that became deeply embedded in the cultural memory of Bangladesh.

For nearly five decades, he remained one of the most influential figures in the industry, appearing in around 500 Bengali and Urdu films. He also stepped behind the camera as a director and produced films through his own Rajlaxmi Productions.

His contribution was recognised with five National Film Awards for Best Actor. In 2015, he received the Independence Award, Bangladesh's highest civilian honour, for his outstanding contribution to the country's culture.

But Rajjak's greatest achievement may be the bond he created with audiences. His characters, expressions and unforgettable dialogues have survived long after his final appearance. Even nine years after his death, his films continue to find new audiences and his name still carries the weight of an era.

The actor may have taken his final bow nine years ago, but Nayak Raj Razzak—the star, the icon and the symbol of an unforgettable golden age—never truly left the screen. His presence on the silver screen remains as powerful as ever.
