Colombia launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in style, overcoming World Cup newcomers Uzbekistan 3-1 in an entertaining Group K encounter at Mexico City's iconic Azteca Stadium on Thursday (June 18).

The South Americans dominated large stretches of the match and were rewarded with an early breakthrough when defender Daniel Munoz put Colombia ahead in the 39th minute. Luis Diaz delivered a dangerous ball into the box and Munoz met it with a clever touch to steer the ball into the net.

Colombia completely controlled the first half, enjoying 72 percent possession and limiting Uzbekistan to no shots on target. Nestor Lorenzo's side created several chances and looked firmly in command heading into the break with a deserved one-goal advantage.

However, Uzbekistan, making their historic World Cup debut, responded strongly after halftime. Midfielder Abbosbek Fayzullaev brought the Central Asian side level in the 60th minute after reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area. The goal sparked hopes of a famous comeback and briefly shifted the momentum of the contest.

Colombia's response was immediate. Just five minutes later, star winger Luis Diaz restored the lead with a clinical finish, cutting into the box before firing a low right-footed strike beyond the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

Despite Uzbekistan's determination, Colombia continued to dictate play and create the better opportunities. Their victory was sealed deep into stoppage time when Jaminton Campaz met a precise cross from Cucho Hernandez and guided a low header into the bottom corner in the ninth minute of added time.

The result gives Colombia a perfect start in Group K and strengthens their early bid for a place in the knockout stage. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, showed flashes of promise in their first-ever World Cup appearance but were ultimately undone by Colombia's superior quality and attacking depth.

Colombia will face DR Congo in their next group match on June 24, while Uzbekistan will take on Portugal in a crucial fixture on June 23.
