Dinesh Trivedi’s meeting with Modi in Delhi, Tarique Rahman’s India visit in discussion
India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has held a meeting with the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi after going to Delhi on an unscheduled visit. The meeting between them took place around 1pm local time on Tuesday.
Citing diplomatic sources of Delhi, BBC Bangla has informed that Dinesh Trivedi went to Delhi to convey the message regarding the possible India visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the current position of Dhaka on various issues of Bangladesh-India relations.
The High Commissioner of India arrived in Delhi on a flight from Dhaka on Monday night. However, no official information has been given from the side of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi or the Prime Minister’s Office regarding this visit and the meeting with the Prime Minister.
Dinesh Trivedi is a politically appointed diplomat of India. He was appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh last April. He is a former Railway Minister of India and a long-time politician.
Recently, discussions are ongoing between the two countries regarding the possible India visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. On September 30, Dinesh Trivedi had informed that the India visit of Tarique Rahman will take place, but discussions have not yet been held on the date of the visit. He had also commented that time should be given for the necessary preparations between the two countries.
On the other hand, discussions are also ongoing on various unresolved issues of the relations between the two countries. Among these are the issues of sending back former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh, water sharing and trade.
On October 3, Dinesh Trivedi had said that it is necessary to advance on the basis of regular discussions, mutual respect and trust regarding the issues that remain unresolved between Bangladesh and India.
Regarding sending Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi has recently said that the matter is within the legal process and it is not possible to state a specific timeframe in this regard.
On the other hand, the tenure of the Ganges water sharing treaty signed in 1996 is also scheduled to end in December of the current year. It has been mentioned in the report that discussions between the two countries on the renewal of the treaty have not yet advanced.
