Dhaka Metropolitan Police has banned all forms of public gatherings; including rallies, human chains, demonstrations and processions across the Supreme Court area. The decision has been taken in the interest of public order and security, DMP said.

The ban takes effect from Thursday, December 11 and will continue until further notice. The order has been issued under Section 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance 1976.

In the public notice signed by DMP commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali, NDC, it is stated that no programme or protest will be allowed in front of the chief justice’s official residence, judges’ complex, the main Supreme Court gate, mazar gate, mosque gate, the entry gates of International Crimes Tribunal-1 and 2, and the Judicial Administration Training Institute.

It further urged all parties not to block roads under any circumstances in the name of demonstrations or demands, causing disruption to public movement.

Officials in law enforcement said recent developments created concerns about potential unrest in the Supreme Court area, prompting the preventive order.

DMP said the ban will be strictly enforced to ensure public safety and law-and-order.
