Dozens of migrants rescued off Greece, most Bangladeshi and Sudanese

Greece's Coast Guard has rescued dozens of migrants off the coast of the island of Crete. Most of those rescued are citizens of Bangladesh and Sudan, along with several Egyptian nationals.

Greek authorities said around 40 migrants were rescued on Thursday, August 6. Over the past 48 hours, more than 200 people have reached Crete after crossing the hazardous sea route from Libya.

Greek media outlet Dimokratia reported that a Coast Guard patrol vessel and a fishing boat assisted in the rescue operation, and the migrants were taken to the port of Ierapetra, where registration and identification procedures have begun.

Earlier, 112 migrants arrived in Greece on two separate boats. In the first group of 56, 31 were from Sudan and 25 from Bangladesh. In the second group of 56, 47 were Bangladeshi and 9 Egyptian.

According to a report by Middle East Monitor, attempts to reach Greece from Libya across the Mediterranean Sea have increased recently. This sea route is considered one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world.
