Driver arrested over alleged rape of woman in ambulance in Chandpur

In Chandpur, Md. Murad Hossain (37) has been arrested over allegations of raping a 24-year-old mentally unstable woman in an ambulance. The victim’s brother-in-law filed a case at Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station against Murad and two to three unidentified individuals.

Md. Bahar Mia, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the information on Saturday afternoon. He stated that the arrested Murad is the son of Mostafa Bepari from Professorpara, Chandpur town.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday night in Nijgachtala area of Bagadi Union in Sadar Upazila. A police patrol was present on the road, and they stopped the ambulance, conducted a search, rescued the woman, and detained the driver Murad.

Local sources said that Murad was travelling from Dhaka to Lakshmipur with a patient. On the way, the woman was put into the ambulance with the assistance of several people from Lakshmipur bus stand.

The family stated that the woman is mentally unstable and abandoned by her husband. She lives with her parents and occasionally leaves home without their knowledge. On the morning of 4 September, she left home again, and when the family could not locate her, the police took her into custody.

OC Md. Bahar Mia said that the woman has undergone a medical forensic examination at Chandpur 250-bed Government Hospital. Investigation into the case is ongoing.
