Earthquake hit Sikkim, tremors felt in northern Bangladesh at midnight

Mild tremors were felt in several northern districts of Bangladesh following a series of earthquakes in India’s Sikkim region.

Residents of Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Panchagarh and surrounding areas reported feeling tremors for a few seconds at around 1:40 am on Thursday night.

According to India’s National Centre for Seismology, three earthquakes struck the Sikkim region between 1:39 am and 2:03 am on Thursday night. The first earthquake, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at 1:39 am. This was followed by a 3.5-magnitude tremor at 1:45 am and a 2.2-magnitude tremor at 2:03 am.

One of the earthquakes was centred in Gangtok, while the other two originated in the Gyalshing and Mangan areas of Sikkim.

The tremors were felt across several northern districts of Bangladesh, including Rangpur, Nilphamari, Rajshahi, Naogaon, Panchagarh, Dinajpur and Thakurgaon.

Many people woke up in panic and some residents rushed outside for safety. However, no casualties or major damage have been reported so far.
