Easy tips to reduce AC electricity bills in summer
To stay comfortable during the hot summer months, most households now keep their air conditioners running for long hours. This directly impacts the electricity bill at the end of the month. However, experts say that by simply using the AC correctly, electricity costs can be significantly reduced—without having to buy a new one.
Ideal temperature setting
Many believe that the lower the AC temperature, the faster the room cools. But that's not the case. Setting a lower temperature forces the compressor to work harder and longer, increasing electricity consumption. Experts recommend keeping the AC temperature between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius. Studies show that lowering the temperature by 1 degree below 24°C can increase electricity consumption by 6 to 8 percent.
Some studies also indicate that increasing the temperature by 1 degree can reduce electricity use by 3 to 6 percent, depending on room size, outdoor conditions and AC type. Between 24°C and 26°C, the compressor runs longer at 24°C, whereas at 26°C, it cycles off more frequently, saving more energy. This difference can save anywhere from Tk 700 to Tk 1,200 per month. Doctors also consider 26°C safer for health, as it prevents sudden temperature shocks to the body.
Use a fan with AC
Running a ceiling or stand fan at low speed while the AC is on helps circulate cool air faster throughout the room. This allows the room to cool down quickly without needing to lower the temperature further, saving electricity.
Use sleep mode and timer
During sleep, using the sleep mode or timer can be helpful. These features automatically increase the temperature by 1 degree every hour, helping maintain comfort while reducing energy use. Once the set time is over, the AC turns off automatically, preventing unnecessary power waste.
Clean filters and regular servicing
Regular filter cleaning is essential for better cooling efficiency. Experts recommend cleaning the AC filter every two to four weeks and professional servicing at least once a year. This improves longevity and performance. Additionally, keeping doors and windows closed while the AC is on and using curtains to block direct sunlight help the room cool faster and more efficiently.
Use dry mode in monsoon
During the rainy season, when humidity is high, using the dry mode can be effective. Experts say keeping the temperature between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius during this time is ideal for both comfort and health.
However, experts caution that simply changing settings won't cut the electricity bill in half. Actual savings depend on the AC's energy star rating, room size, outdoor temperature, insulation and daily usage hours. When buying a new AC, experts advise checking both smart features and high energy efficiency with good star ratings.
