Economy boosted by remittances ahead of Eid, nearly $3 billion in 23 days

Expatriate Bangladeshis are sending more money home ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, as they do every year, giving a significant boost to remittance inflows throughout the month. In the first 23 days of May, remittances through official banking channels have reached nearly $3 billion, according to updated central bank data released on Sunday, May 24.

A total of $2.97605 billion in remittances was received during this period, which is 41.31 per cent higher than the same period last year. In local currency, this amounts to approximately Tk 36,307.20 crore.

In the first 23 days of May 2025, remittances stood at $2.1006 billion, indicating a significant increase in expatriate income flow this year. On May 23 alone, $173.6 million in remittances was received.

From July 1 to May 23 of the current 2025-26 fiscal year, total remittances reached $32.3009 billion, up from $26.6434 billion during the same period of the previous fiscal year, representing growth of 21.26 per cent.

In April, remittances stood at $3.22 billion, while in March, expatriates sent $3.75 billion, the highest monthly remittance inflow in the country's history.
