Sebastián Beccacece has stepped down as head coach of Ecuador right after his team’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the round of 32, which ended their World Cup campaign. In his farewell message, he stated that although he wished to continue working with the team, he decided to step down because he could not fulfil the promise he had made.

Ecuador had advanced to the knockout stage with a dramatic comeback victory against Germany, but they failed to break Mexico’s resistance in the end. The hosts played aggressive football from the start, and Ecuador could not find the net against their solid defence.

After the match at the Azteca Stadium, Beccacece said his contract with the federation was until the World Cup. He acknowledged that he could not deliver on his promise of giving Ecuador the best World Cup in their history, and therefore the time had come to leave.

Beccacece also highlighted the support he received from the players and the federation. He noted that although there was an opportunity to continue in the role, the nature of football made the decision clear to him. He said he accepted the decision with a heavy heart.
