Egypt extend Hossam Hassan’s contract after historic World Cup run

Egypt have rewarded coach Hossam Hassan for guiding the national team to an impressive 2026 World Cup campaign, extending his contract through 2030.

Hassan, 60, took charge in 2024 and has overseen a steady revival of Egyptian football. Under his leadership, Egypt reached the last 16 at the 2026 World Cup and secured their first-ever World Cup victory by beating New Zealand in the group stage.

Their campaign ultimately ended in the round of 16 after a dramatic 3-2 defeat to eventual finalists Argentina. Egypt had taken a 2-0 lead before Argentina fought back late in the match to complete the comeback.

Hassan had already made his mark before the World Cup, guiding Egypt to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His team’s continued progress and strong World Cup showing have now earned him a long-term commitment from the Egyptian Football Association.

The new deal also ends a period of uncertainty over Hassan’s position. He had been working without a formal contract since February and revealed the situation publicly in June.

Hassan will not have long to rest after securing his future. Egypt’s next major assignment comes in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with Angola awaiting them on September 25 before a meeting with South Sudan four days later.

After making their mark on the global stage, Hassan and Egypt now turn their attention to maintaining that momentum in African football.
