Eight killed, 12 injured in stampede at Bihar temple
At least eight people were killed and 12 injured in a stampede at a temple in India's Bihar state. The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 31, at the Shitala Temple in Nalanda.
Indian media, citing police and local sources, reported that hundreds of devotees gather at the Shitala Temple every Tuesday. A large crowd had assembled on Tuesday when a sudden rush among those waiting in line led to the stampede.
The injured were admitted to local hospitals. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Chaudhary expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The Bihar government said families of the deceased would receive financial assistance totalling Tk 6 lakh, with Tk 4 lakh from the disaster management department and Tk 2 lakh from the chief minister's relief fund.
