French authorities have summoned Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and one of the world's wealthiest individuals, as part of an ongoing major investigation into the platform.

Musk has been asked to voluntarily appear in Paris for questioning on Monday, April 20. The investigation, which began in January 2025, alleges that X's algorithm was used to interfere in France's internal politics. However, it remains unclear whether Musk will appear before French authorities today.

French prosecutors have expanded the scope of the investigation to include allegations that X's AI chatbot 'Grok' was used to deny the Holocaust or Nazi genocide and to spread offensive deepfake images. In February, prosecutors raided X's offices in Paris, a move that X authorities described as "politically motivated" and an "abuse of judicial power."

In addition to Musk, former X CEO Linda Yaccarino has also been summoned in the interest of the investigation. The Paris Prosecutor's Office made it clear on Sunday that the investigation will not stop even if Musk or others fail to appear for questioning.

French investigators are examining several serious allegations against X, including facilitating the storage of child sexual abuse material and denying crimes against humanity.

Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said X employees have also been summoned for interviews on a rolling basis between April 20 and 24. No specific location or time has been disclosed for Musk's interview due to security and confidentiality reasons.

Meanwhile, Musk's company has faced intense global controversy over Grok. The chatbot has been accused of generating numerous offensive and nude images of women and children. The Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) claims that Grok generated approximately 3 million objectionable images in just 11 days, a large portion of which resemble children.

The European Union and the United Kingdom have also launched separate investigations into X and xAI. France's summons is seen as a major part of the increasing international legal pressure on X.
