The Bangladesh Embassy in Bucharest has urged Bangladeshi nationals residing in Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Moldova to exercise caution when using social media and online platforms. The embassy issued a public awareness notice on Monday, August 17.

In the notice, the embassy said while social media is an important medium for communication and information exchange in the current era, various types of content published or shared there can lead to unintended legal complications. It advised verifying any information before publishing it online.

The embassy particularly urged extra caution when posting, commenting, sharing photos or videos on sensitive topics such as religion, politics, public order and national security. Bangladeshis were also urged not to publish or share any information or content that could violate the laws of the respective countries.

The notice said content considered threatening, provocative, discriminatory or offensive should be avoided. It also advised being cautious about whether any post or message appears to express support for violence or extremist activities.

Urging Bangladeshis living abroad to be respectful of local laws and regulations, the embassy said the social values and sensitivities of each country should also be taken into consideration. Responsible behaviour can help avoid potential legal complications and maintain a safe and friendly environment in the respective countries.

The Bangladesh Embassy in Bucharest called on Bangladeshis living in Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Moldova to make informed and conscious decisions online, and to use social media in a restrained, respectful and lawful manner. According to the embassy, online behaviour also plays a significant role in maintaining the positive image of Bangladeshi citizens abroad.
