Embolo strike puts Switzerland lead 1-0 against Algeria at half-time
Breel Embolo's early strike put Switzerland ahead 1-0 against Algeria at half-time in a tense FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash at BC Place on Friday (July 3-BST).
Embolo broke the deadlock in the 10th minute, converting from close range after Johan Manzambi released him with a defence-splitting pass on a swift counterattack. The goal, the forward's first of the tournament, capped an assured opening spell in which Switzerland pressed high and forced Algeria into uncomfortable errors in possession.
Algeria did not fold. Riyad Mahrez's side steadily wrestled control of the game away from the Swiss as the half progressed, and by the midway point of the opening period they were enjoying the lion's share of the ball. A yellow card shown to an Algeria player in the 36th minute did little to interrupt that momentum, and by the interval the North Africans had claimed 58 percent possession to Switzerland's 42.
The shot count told its own story of the shifting balance: level at five apiece, with two on target for each side. Algeria also won an offside call in the closing stages of the half as they searched for an equaliser, while Switzerland had earlier gone close again from distance during a spell of sustained first-half pressure.
Switzerland lined up with Gregor Kobel in goal behind a back four of Zakaria, Elvedi, Akanji and Rodriguez, with Xhaka and Freuler screening in midfield and Ndoye, Vargas and Manzambi supporting Embolo up front. Algeria fielded Zidane in goal behind Mandi and Bensebaini at centre-back, with captain Mahrez leading the line alongside Chaibi, and have looked more assured going forward as the half wore on despite trailing on the scoreboard.
The stakes are significant for both sides. Switzerland arrive at the knockout stage unbeaten after topping Group B, and a win would take them to a fifth World Cup Round of 16 appearance in the last six editions — though this is the first time they have faced an African nation in a knockout match. Algeria, who qualified as one of the best third-placed teams following a dramatic group campaign that included a 3-3 draw with Austria, are chasing their first-ever World Cup knockout win and will need to turn their improved second-half territory into a breakthrough if their campaign is to continue.
Switzerland and Algeria had never previously met in a competitive fixture, with their only prior meetings coming in friendlies in the 1980s — both won by the Swiss.
