Emi Martinez signs for Chelsea
Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has finally signed for Chelsea by ending his long journey with Aston Villa. He has been contracted with the London club in exchange for 7.5 million pounds. After the long-running rumour of transfer the new address of this star goalkeeper has been confirmed this time.
After joining Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020 Martinez gradually became an important member of the team. In the six-year journey he has guarded the goalpost in 255 matches combining all competitions for the club. He has the experience of playing in all three major club competitions of Europe for Villa.
Martinez’s last match for Aston Villa was also emotional. He took the field in the Europa League final by using painkiller medicine even with an injury in the finger. This Argentine goalkeeper had also made a special place among the supporters by giving extraordinary performances in multiple matches at important times for the club.
However Martinez had been in search of new experience and challenge for quite some days. Considering his possible departure Aston Villa had brought goalkeeper Zayn Suzuki from Parma in advance. The name of Juventus had also come in discussion as Martinez’s next destination. Finally that discussion with the Italian club did not take the form of a contract.
Coach Unai Emery has praised his contribution at the end of Martinez’s Villa chapter. Villa is now planning to move forward with new goalkeepers by bidding farewell to this Argentine who played an important role under the goalpost of the club for a long time.
A new chapter has started in Martinez’s career through joining Chelsea. The experience of international and club football of this World Cup-winning goalkeeper and the ability to perform by handling pressure in big matches can add a new dimension to Chelsea’s goalpost. This Argentine star can become one of the biggest attractions of the London club in the new season.
