Legendary folk singer Farida Parveen has been admitted to the capital's Universal Medical College Hospital.

She was rushed to the hospital after she suddenly fell ill on Saturday (February 1) morning, said her younger son Imam Zafar Nomani.

It is learned that Farida Parvin has been suffering from kidney disease for a long time. She was admitted to the hospital after her physical condition suddenly deteriorated at her home. She is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Her husband, instrumentalist Gazi Abdul Hakim, told a national daily that fluid has accumulated in her lungs, along with several other complications.

Ashish Kumar Chakraborty, managing director of Universal Medical College, told the media on Saturday night, “She was admitted at dawn due to acute respiratory distress. After necessary tests, she was placed in the ICU. Her lungs are affected, and she also suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid issues, and age-related complications.”

“She is currently under the care of specialists in respiratory diseases, nephrology, and critical care. Her condition is somewhat complex, and we have recommended dialysis. Let's see how things progress,” he added.

Farida Parveen started her journey in the music world in 1968 as a listed artist of Rajshahi Betar through singing Nazrul Sangeet. After gaining popularity by singing patriotic songs, she started learning Lalon Sangeet in 1973 from legendary folk singer Sadhak Moksed Ali Shah.

In recognition of her extraordinary contribution to the field of music, Farida Parveen received the Ekushey Padak in 1987. She also received the ‘Fukuwaka Asian Culture Award’ from the Japanese government in 2008 and the National Film Award for Best Playback Singer in 1993.

With the aim of spreading Lalon Sangeet among children, she has established a music school called 'Achin Pakhi School'.
