After 30 years, smiles have finally returned to the faces of people at five villages in Sharsha border area of Jashore because of the removal of water from a beel.

Due to the lack of drainage of the canal water and waterlogging, farmers in the area could not cultivate on 25 thousand bighas of land year after year.

Now, alongside Boro cultivation, they will be able to cultivate all types of crops in the future, locals said.

It is known that from a branch of the Ichhamati River flowing through the border of Rudrapur in Sharsha, 152 canals and water bodies were created, with agriculture being the main source of income for the people living on the banks.

Due to the water from the Ujan River in India and the water created during the rainy season, there was always waterlogging, which made it challenging for farmers to cultivate a crop in one season.

After a long 30 years, local MP Sheikh Afil Uddin has arranged for cultivation on 25 thousand bighas of land at five villages in the border area, ensuring that three crops can be cultivated.

He has set up modern irrigation pumps for water extraction at the connecting points of Rudrapur, Dawudkhali, Bhawanipur, and Kaybar Thyangamari beels through private funding.

In this year's national election, lawmaker Afil Uddin has pledged to address the sorrows and hardships of the farmers in this region. Keeping his promise, he arranged for water removal in the first week of this month.

Not only that, after 50 percent completion of drainage work, the lawmaker started the paddy planting work with the farmers of Rudrapur, Daudkhali, Bhabanipur, Kaibar Thangamari Beel.

With the fulfillment of long-awaited dreams after 30 years, the locals expressed their gratitude to the local parliamentarian.

Local farmer Taijul Islam said that all the arable land along the canals in the region remain under water every year due to the flood and rainwater from the Ichamati river flowing near the border of India and Bangladesh.

“Although dependent on agriculture, the people here had to rely on fishing from all the canals and beels throughout the year for their livelihood.

If all the obstacles are overcome, we will be able to produce golden crops again. That's why we express our heartfelt gratitude to the local MP,” he added.

Kayba Union Awami League's general secretary Shariful Islam and former chairman of Kayba Union, Hasan Firoz Ahmed Tinku, said after a long 30 years, the light of hope has finally dawned on the faces of the people living on the banks of Sharsha border."

Under the leadership of MP Afil Uddin, there has been a transformation in the fate of the people in this region.

Alongside an increase in rice cultivation on 25 thousand bighas of land in Shasha upazila, other crops will also see growth from all these lands.
