A strong earthquake struck the Hindu Kush mountain region of Afghanistan, located in Central-South Asia. The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 164 kilometers east of Baghlan city in Afghanistan, with the tremor originating 121 kilometers (75 miles) below the surface. Initially, the EMSC reported the magnitude as 6.4, but later revised it to 5.6.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been received, according to news agency Anadolu.

Due to its geographical location, Afghanistan is one of the earthquake-prone countries. The country has a long and painful history of earthquakes. According to statistics, more than 10,000 people have died in Afghanistan due to earthquakes in the past three decades.

In 1991, a powerful earthquake in the Hindu Kush region caused the deaths of 848 people in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the former Soviet Union.

Later, in 1997, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Kayan city, located near the border between Iran's Khorasan province and Afghanistan, killed more than 1,500 people and destroyed over 10,000 homes.

In February 1998, a devastating earthquake in Afghanistan's northeastern Takhar province and the Tajikistan border area killed nearly 4,000 people, with around 2,300 of them from Afghanistan alone.
