Autorickshaw drivers continue road blockade for 2nd day in capital
Drivers have staged blockades on the main roads of Rampura, Badda, and Shahjadpur in the capital, demanding the operation of autorickshaws. As a result, city dwellers are experiencing heavy traffic congestion.
Around 10:15 am on Monday (May 20), protesters blocked the road in front of Rampura Better Life Hospital. Within half an hour, Rampura police and Rampura traffic police reached the scene and brought the situation under control.
The Assistant Commissioner of the Rampura zone within the Motijheel traffic department informed the media that initially, autorickshaw drivers had occupied a position on the road. However, they were subsequently removed from the main road.
Autorickshaw drivers have blocked the road in Shahjadpur, causing traffic congestion on one side of the road in front of Cambrian College. Public transport vehicles are stranded on the roads.
The general public has been affected by the traffic disruption, with passengers observed standing for extended periods on the road as they await public transport.
Earlier on Sunday (May 19), a chase and counter-chase unfolded between battery-operated rickshaw drivers and the police in capital's Mirpur. During this incident, one person sustained injuries from a shotgun.
