Bangladesh book place in women’s Cricket World Cup
Bangladesh wrapped up their Women’s World Cup Qualifiers campaign with a defeat, losing to hosts Pakistan by 7 wickets on Saturday (April 19). Despite the loss, they secured a spot in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. In another match, West Indies claimed a 6-wicket win over Thailand but still fell short of qualification. Both teams finished with 6 points, but West Indies were edged out due to a lower net run rate.
From the six-team qualifiers that ended on April 19, Pakistan advanced to the main event as the top team on the points table with 10 points from 5 matches. Bangladesh confirmed their World Cup spot as the second team, collecting 6 points from 3 wins out of 5 matches. There was a close contest between Bangladesh and West Indies in terms of net run rate. Bangladesh had a net run rate of 0.639. Although West Indies hit many boundaries against Thailand and came close, they finished with a net run rate of 0.626 — falling short by just 0.013.
Bangladesh started well in the qualifiers, winning their first three matches and getting closer to World Cup qualification. A win against West Indies would have secured their place, but Bangladesh lost that match. Then, they had a chance to qualify directly by beating Pakistan. However, they lost that match too. So, they had to wait for the results of the West Indies and Thailand match to know their fate.
Against Pakistan in Lahore on Saturday, Bangladesh's batting collapsed. They lost 3 wickets for just 21 runs. Then Sharmin and Ritu Moni built a 44-run stand for the fourth wicket, followed by a 47-run partnership between Ritu and Nahida for the fifth wicket. No other notable partnerships followed. Sharmin was dismissed for 24, Ritu Moni scored 47, and Fahima remained unbeaten on 44. Bangladesh finished on 178 for 9 wickets. In reply, Pakistan chased down the target in 39.4 overs losing only 3 wickets.
