Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi sentenced to death for songs critical of govt
An Iranian court sentenced popular rapper Toomaj Salehi to death for singing songs critical of the government.
Lawyer Amir Rasian told the Iranian media about the rapper's death sentence. However, no one from the state has spoken about this death sentence.
Two years ago, 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish girl Mahsa Amini died in police custody. Many people of the country protested against that incident. Protests spread across Iran. Thousands of people took to the streets at that time.
During the movement, 33-year-old Toomaj Salehi sang songs criticising Iran's corruption, regime, and government. He was arrested several times for his songs. He was also threatened several times. But he was vocal in his protest against the government through music.
Iranian police arrested Salehi in 2022. He was initially sentenced to 6 years and 3 months of imprisonment.
He was later released on bail by the Supreme Court of Iran. But a few days later he was arrested again.
