Over 3bn active Facebook users, 3% fake profiles: Meta

As of 2024, Facebook has over 3 billion active users, with around 3 percent of them being fake profiles, according to a recently published Meta report.

Of these, about 1.4 billion accounts were were flagged for various reasons in the last quarter of last year.

The report indicates that while fake accounts are being flagged through a combination of human monitoring and automated technology, fake profiles are constantly being created in new methods.

Meta reports that some accounts are deliberately created to violate policies, while others represent businesses, organisations, or pets instead of real people.

Main reasons for identifying fake accounts include spam, misinformation, coordinated bot activity, and identity manipulation.

Despite being the largest social media platform, fake accounts have been a long-standing issue for Facebook. Since 2019, Meta has removed over a billion fake accounts per quarter, though detection rates have slightly declined since 2023.
