Rice, chicken prices increase

The price of chicken has increased slightly in the market due to low supply and increased demand.

Besides, the price of rice has also increased during the peak Aman season.

The prices of onions and new potatoes, however, have started to decrease.

This information was obtained visiting different kitchen markets including Karwan Bazar, Kaptan Bazar, Krishi Market in the capital on Friday (December 20).

Sellers said that despite the peak Aman season in the country, the price of rice has increased by Tk 200 to Tk 250 per sack in the last two weeks. As a result, the price of fine rice at the retail level has increased by Tk 3 to Tk 5 per kg and the price of coarse and medium rice by Tk 2 to Tk 3 per kg.

They said due to the delay in sowing potato and onion seeds due to floods and heavy rains, the two products were selling at high prices. Now, the prices of onions and potatoes have come down as new products have started arriving in the markets.

Visiting the capital’s kitchen markets, it was found that old local onions are selling for Tk 90-110 per kg and imported onions at Tk 80-90. Chopped onions are selling for Tk 70-80, and onions with leaves are selling for Tk 50-60 per kg.

On the other hand, the price of potatoes has decreased by Tk 10-20 due to increased supply. Currently, both new and old potatoes are selling for Tk 60-70.

Meanwhile, there has been a shortage of bottled soybeans in the market for several weeks. On December 9, the price of soybean oil was increased by Tk 8 per litre. Still, the shortage has not ended.

Md Rokon, a grocer at Karwan Bazar kitchen market, said that edible oil companies are not supplying oil. What we are getting is much less than the demand.

Meanwhile, consumers are finding relief in the vegetable market. Cauliflower is selling for Tk 40 per piece, cabbage is selling for Tk 40 per piece. Fresh tomatoes are selling for Tk 140 per kg, radish is selling for Tk 30 per kg, long brinjal is selling for Tk 60 per kg, carrot is selling for Tk 80 per kg, round brinjal is selling for Tk 80 per kg, onion flowers are selling for Tk 20 per bunch, shrimp is selling for Tk 80 per kg, turnip is selling for Tk 50 per kg, raw tomatoes are selling for Tk 50 per kg.

Apart from this, depending on the type, beans are selling for Tk 40-80 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 60-80, papaya at Tk 50, and gourd at Tk 50-60 per kg. Barberry is selling for Tk 100 per kg, cucumber at Tk 60 per kg, green chilli at Tk 60-80 per kg, sweet pumpkin at Tk 40 per kg, and okra at Tk 80 per kg.

Now medium-sized Rui fish is selling for Tk 250 to 280 per kg. Large-sized farmed Pangash is selling for Tk 200 per kg, tilapia at Tk 210, Koi at Tk 200, shing at Tk 400 to 450, Pabda at Tk 350 to 400, prawns at Tk 600, and small local Panchmishali fish at Tk 500 per kg.
