Severe floods, landslides in Nepal claim 112 lives
Continuous rains over the past three days have led to catastrophic floods and landslides across Nepal, claiming at least 112 lives as of Saturday night. As many as 68 others have gone missing in the disasters.
According to the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force headquarters, the death toll includes at least 20 in Lalitpur, 15 in Dhading, 34 in Kavre, 12 in Kathmandu, 7 in Makawanpur, 5 each in Bhaktapur and Panchthar, 4 in Sindhupalchok, 3 in Dolakha, 2 each in Dhankuta and Solukhumbu, and 1 each in Ramechhap, Mahottari, and Sunsari districts. The ministry also reports that at least 68 individuals are missing across various districts, including Panchthar, Jhapa, Mahottari, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Kavre, Sindhuli, Dhading, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, and Rupandehi.
The floods and landslides have disrupted life across many areas of the country. Highways and roads are blocked, hundreds of houses and bridges have been buried or swept away, and many families have been displaced. Thousands of passengers are stranded in different locations because of the road closures.
The central and eastern districts have been hit hardest by the floods and landslides. The Kathmandu Valley suffered a significant loss of life, with at least 37 deaths. All highways and roads connecting Kathmandu, the national capital, are now cut off.
On Saturday, Kathmandu Valley recorded its highest rainfall since at least 1970, when the country began measuring rainfall.
