USA thrash Canada in T20 World Cup Opener
In the opening match of the T20 World Cup, the United States secured victory against Canada in the 'A' group match on Sunday morning, winning by a significant margin of 7 wickets.
Canada, batting first at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, posted an impressive total of 194 runs in 20 overs, losing 5 wickets, courtesy of half-centuries by two batsmen. In response, the USA secured victory with 14 balls to spare.
USA's previous highest run chase record in T20 cricket stood at 169. To set a new record, Monank Patel's team deliberately choose the first match of the T20 World Cup.
Aaron Jones played a pivotal role in guiding the record-setting USA to victory. Batting at number four, Jones achieved a 22-ball fifty, setting a new record for the fastest fifty by a United States player in T20 cricket. His innings significantly altered the course of the match. Jones remained unbeaten, scoring 94 runs off 40 balls, including 10 sixes. Andries Gous, batting at number three, provided valuable support, scoring fifty off 39 balls.
Together, these two formed an extraordinary partnership, amassing 131 runs off just 58 balls. Their remarkable scoring rate of 14.29 runs per over set a new record for the fastest century partnership in the T20 World Cup. Gous was dismissed after contributing 65 runs from 46 balls.
