Donald Trump, who overcame impeachments, criminal indictments and a pair of assassination attempts to win another term in the White House, has sworn in as the 47th US president on Monday, taking charge as Republicans assume unified control of Washington and set out to reshape the country's institutions.

Trump will act swiftly after the ceremony, with executive orders already prepared for his signature to clamp down on border crossings, increase fossil fuel development and end diversity and inclusion programs across the federal government.

He plans to declare the beginning of “a thrilling new era of national success” as “a tide of change is sweeping the country," according to excerpts of his inaugural address.

The executive orders are the first step in what Trump will call “the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense."

Frigid weather is rewriting the pageantry of the day. Trump’s swearing-in was moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda — the first time that has happened in 40 years — and the inaugural parade was replaced by an event at a downtown arena. Throngs of Trump supporters who descended on the city to watch the inaugural ceremony on the West Front of the Capitol from the National Mall will be left to find somewhere else to view the festivities.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez. The world's richest man and Trump's close ally Elon Musk also appeared as a guest at the Capitol building.

It is believed that Donald Trump will start implementing his declared 'America First' policy after taking office as the US president for a second term.

Mr. Trump's agenda will not only change the details of US foreign policy, but will also greatly impact the lives of millions of people living outside America's borders.

Ukraine

During the election campaign, Donald Trump has repeatedly said that he can end the Russia-Ukraine war 'in a day'.

Although he has never disclosed details about how exactly he will do it.

Mr. Trump has been a vocal critic of the billions of dollars in military aid the United States has provided to Ukraine since the start of the Russo-Ukraine war.

Keith Kellogg, who is set to be Mr. Trump's special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, also recently told Fox News that he has a plan to end the war within 100 days.

Mr. Trump recently said that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to meet with him and that Trump's aides are "making preparations" for the meeting.

NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, a 32-nation military alliance including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, has long been a target of Donald Trump.

During his first term as president, he threatened to withdraw the United States from NATO if NATO members did not meet their commitment to spend two percent of their GDP on defense. At the time, he also said that the United States would not help a country if it was attacked if it did not spend its promised amount on defense.

In early January of this year, Mr. Trump called on NATO's European members to increase defense spending and allocate five percent of their national income to defense.

According to Donald Trump's campaign website, his goal is to "reassess NATO's purpose and principles."

Analysts disagree on whether he will ever withdraw the United States from the alliance.

But many analysts believe that Mr. Trump could reduce the importance of NATO as a member. For example, he could reduce the number of US troops stationed in Europe.

Middle East

Although Mr. Trump is taking office after the Gaza ceasefire agreement was signed, he will have to overcome many challenges to ensure its long-term implementation.

In other words, it will be difficult for Donald Trump to permanently end this war.

Donald Trump has made several pro-Israel moves since his first term as president.

These included recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The Trump administration has also taken a tough stance on Iran. The US withdrew from the nuclear deal, tightened sanctions on Iran and killed Iran's most powerful military commander, General Qassem Soleimani.

Many critics say Mr. Trump's policies have destabilised the Middle East and alienated the Palestinians.

During his term, he implemented the Abraham Accords and sought to normalise diplomatic relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.

However, the agreement included a condition set by Arab states that Israel would recognise an independent Palestinian state in the future, a condition that has never been met.

After announcing a ceasefire in Gaza, Mr. Trump said he would "bring peace by force" to the Middle East based on the Abraham Accords.

Many analysts believe this means he will try to broker a deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

China

Donald Trump started a trade war with China during his first term in office.

He has also indicated that the United States will impose a 60 percent tariff on Chinese goods.

His nominees for secretary of state and national security adviser – Marco Rubio and Mike Waltz – are both seen as tough on China.

They have made it clear in their speeches that they see Beijing as a major threat.

Taiwan, on the other hand, is also a key issue. The United States has always provided military support to self-ruled Taiwan, which China sees as a territory that is currently separated from China but will be under Beijing's control in the future.

During the election campaign, Mr. Trump also hinted that he would impose tougher taxes on China if it tries to block Taiwan.

Climate change

The new US president is known for his opposition to the idea of climate change.

He has previously called the idea of green energy a "hoax".

Many believe that he will once again withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Joe Biden has reversed Donald Trump's first-term decision to include the United States in the Paris Agreement in 2021.

And Mr. Trump has also promised to drill more wells to ensure a cheaper energy supply.

Climate change experts say Mr. Trump's presidency is a threat to global climate action.

Immigration

The threat to deport immigrants living in the United States without proper authorization was a major part of Donald Trump's election campaign this year.

He will begin the "largest mass deportation program in US history" on his first day in the White House.

The new president even aims to change the policy that allows US citizenship by birth - that is, the provision of US citizenship by birth.

During the election campaign, he also said that he would ban tourists from several countries.

Many of these countries were Muslim-majority countries.

Greenland and the Panama Canal

Donald Trump has drawn widespread criticism for his comments about wanting to buy Greenland and take control of the Panama Canal.

During his previous term as president, Mr. Trump had hinted at wanting to buy Greenland.

Authorities in Denmark and Greenland have said it will not be sold. Greenland, which is under Danish control, is home to a large US space base.

The region also has important mineral resources, which are used to manufacture various high-tech equipment and batteries.

On the other hand, the Panama Canal is an expensive route for transporting goods and goods, and Mr. Trump has also commented that the United States will take control of the Panama Canal if the cost of transporting goods through this route does not decrease.

While the United States may not take control of either region, Donald Trump's recent statements and the 'America First' policy mean that the United States will continue to project its power beyond its borders.
