England team confined to hotel amid tornado warning
The England football team has been placed under a tornado warning within hours of arriving at its World Cup base camp. The players and officials were forced to take shelter in a Kansas City hotel after an emergency warning.
England arrived in Kansas City from Florida on Saturday and practiced in the afternoon local time. Only 26 of the team's players took part in the session, which was attended by about 700 spectators.
However, the weather deteriorated rapidly towards evening. When a tornado warning was issued across the city, the England team members also received an emergency message on their mobile phones. Everyone was ordered to take shelter there.
After the warning, the entire team took shelter inside the hotel. A 'fan festival' in the city was also closed early for safety reasons.
The Met Office said that winds could reach 80 miles per hour (about 129 kilometers) during the storm. Due to the situation, tornado sirens were also sounded on Saturday evening.
England's training camp in Florida was also disrupted by inclement weather, with their friendly against Costa Rica delayed by an hour due to thunderstorms.
Thomas Tuchel's side open their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday.
