The recent violence surrounding the quota movement in Bangladesh was both unexpected and deeply distressing. This tragedy will leave a lasting impact on us all. There is nothing more valuable than human life. In the end, the most significant fact remains: people have died, and many others are suffering.

According to the latest reports, 209 people have lost their lives in the recent quota movement, while the number of injured is still unknown. Neither government nor private hospitals are providing accurate information to the media. Many injured individuals are still being treated in various hospitals across the country, including in the capital.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited Dhaka Medical College Hospital on the afternoon of July 26 to check on the injured. After reviewing their physical conditions and ongoing treatments in the emergency department and various wards, she assured that the government would take responsibility for the treatment of the injured, regardless of their affiliations.

However, according to media reports on July 27, the exact number of injured individuals has yet to be determined. Many hospitals have turned away the injured without providing treatment. Out of fear and panic, many have not even sought hospital care.

The injured include not only quota movement activists but also pedestrians, rickshaw pullers, drivers, and people from various walks of life. Some have become crippled or blind, and many are still in critical condition. Many children are languishing in hospital beds. The administration must ensure that the Prime Minister's assurances are properly implemented.

There are still questions about how these assurances will be effectively carried out, as no specific policy has been outlined. Should the families of the injured apply directly to hospital authorities or the government's health department, or will the government proactively ensure proper medical care by visiting hospitals? It is also unclear what procedures need to be followed to receive long-term medical care.

Besides medical treatment, the government must also provide financial assistance and ensure permanent employment for the families of the injured and deceased. It is essential to remember that everyone who has been injured is a citizen of this country and deserves proper medical care. No one should be deprived of their rightful treatment.

To build a peaceful and humane country, both the government and citizens must show greater tolerance. It must be understood that the loss of an individual is a loss to the state, and vice versa. For the greater good of the country, everyone must demonstrate patriotism. The immediate priority is ensuring the injured receive proper medical care, and it is expected that the government and all concerned parties will be diligent in this regard.
