EU lawmakers seek FIFA probe over Balogun ban reversal after Trump's intervention
A group of European Union lawmakers is pushing for an investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino after the governing body overturned Folarin Balogun's suspension following reported intervention by US President Donald Trump.
Balogun received a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 and was due to serve a one-match ban. However, FIFA later lifted the suspension, allowing the US forward to play.
In a joint statement, MEPs Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang called the decision "a mockery of sporting justice," alleging FIFA had bowed to political pressure.
The lawmakers are urging EU national football associations to request an ethics investigation into Infantino to determine whether political influence affected FIFA's decision. They also want FIFA's broader political neutrality reviewed, including its decision to award Trump the FIFA Peace Prize.
FIFA has yet to comment on the calls for an investigation.
