Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in North America with the dream of winning an elusive World Cup to complete his career. However, Portugal's loss to Spain in the Round of 16 ended that dream. Yet, the Portuguese superstar does not seem to harbour any regret, as he considers the 2016 European Championship win equal to a World Cup victory.

Portugal won their first-ever Euro title in 2016 by defeating France. Ronaldo played a significant role in that historic success. Despite being forced off with an injury in the final, he continued to inspire the team from the sidelines.

Ronaldo has won three trophies with Portugal, one Euro and two UEFA Nations League titles. However, he places the continental triumph above all else.

After the loss to Spain, Ronaldo said, "I gave my best. I have won three trophies with Portugal. Before me, Portugal had never won any trophy. So, I am happy. My biggest trophy with the national team is the Euro 2016. To be honest, for me, its value is equal to the World Cup."

Ronaldo's comments have sparked debate on social media. Where the World Cup is considered the pinnacle of international football, many football pundits have struggled to accept the comparison from the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

His final World Cup campaign did not see Ronaldo shine in terms of individual performance. The Portuguese captain scored three goals. He faced criticism throughout the tournament for not delivering his best as expected. Amid the criticism, he continued to fight on the pitch, but that fight ended in the Round of 16.
