Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has agreed to take charge of Nepal’s interim government, signaling support for the demands of the Gen-Z and Madhesi groups. Her decision has been warmly welcomed by Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah.

Mayor Shah, who has been a vocal participant in the ongoing protests, was also considered a strong contender for leading the interim government. He has urged authorities to organize elections promptly.

In a recent statement, Karki expressed her readiness to address the aspirations of Nepal’s youth. Over 5,000 young people participated in a virtual meeting with the military to discuss the selection of the nation’s next leader. However, some factions within the Gen-Z and Madhesi communities remain opposed to her appointment as interim leader.

Meanwhile, police have called for calm and appealed to maintain law and order amid the unrest.

The situation remains tense as at least 15,000 prisoners have escaped from jails across 25 districts. The military has managed to recapture more than 100 escapees and recover over 70 stolen weapons. The two-day violent protests have resulted in 30 fatalities and left over 1,000 people injured.
