Ex-PCB Chairman supports potential T20 World Cup boycott backing Bangladesh
Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi has said he would support a decision by Pakistan to boycott the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup if the move is taken in solidarity with Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has decided not to play in India, the host of the 2026 tournament, citing security concerns. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had sought to have its matches relocated to Sri Lanka, but the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected the request.
Pakistan media outlet Geo Super has reported that Pakistan may consider a similar course of action if Bangladesh formally boycotts the event. Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has publicly backed the idea, though the PCB has not made any official announcements.
Sethi said he would stand behind such a decision if it is taken by the PCB under its current chairman, Mohsin Naqvi.
In an interview with Telecom Asia Sport, Sethi said Bangladesh had adopted a strong and legitimate position. “Now it is for the PCB to decide. It will be a difficult call, but I would support it. Mohsin Naqvi understands cricket and the broader situation. Whatever decision he makes, the board should remain firm,” he said.
Sethi also criticised the ICC, alleging a pattern of bias in favour of India in major decisions. He said the global governing body must act impartially and that member boards need to act collectively to ensure fairness.
Referring to Bangladesh’s request to move its matches out of India, Sethi said the BCB’s concerns over security and tension were valid and warranted serious consideration. “Those concerns were ignored, largely due to the ICC’s pro-India approach,” he added.
