Fake NEIR website raises risk of personal data theft
A fake phishing website has been launched using the name of the National Equipment Identity Register, NEIR, raising concerns over personal data theft. While the official address is neir.btrc.gov.bd, the fraudulent site uses the URL neribtrc.com, misleading users.
Cybersecurity experts said such phishing sites are designed to steal personal information and spread malware. The fake site includes options such as register, login and check status now. Entering random 15-digit numbers redirects users to the BTRC official page, while clicking register or login sends them to online gambling sites.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chairman Major General retired Emdadul Haque Bari said multiple phishing sites using the NEIR name have been identified and steps are being taken to shut them down.
Experts warned that without swift action, users face serious risks of data leaks and device compromise, advising people to verify URLs carefully and use only official websites.
