Considering the heat, hydration breaks (water drinking pauses) have been introduced in this football World Cup. However, since its introduction, the matter has come under the spotlight of criticism. In the England vs Croatia match at Dallas Stadium, boos were heard across the stands as soon as the first hydration break began on Wednesday. It was clear that the spectators were expressing dissatisfaction with this rule.

Primarily to help players adapt to the summer heat and humidity of North America, FIFA has introduced a mandatory three-minute hydration break in each half. Though this decision has sparked controversy.

Some critics claim that these breaks are disrupting the natural flow and rhythm of the game. Others believe that this arrangement has been introduced essentially to divide the match into four quarters and create extra opportunities for broadcasters to air advertisements.

Before the match, some England supporters had announced protests against hydration breaks on social media. Its reflection was seen in the 22nd minute of the match. As soon as the referee blew the whistle to signal the break, boos started from England and Croatia supporters.

On the same day, in another Group L match between Panama and Ghana, spectators also did not accept the hydration break well. Even as players headed towards their respective benches in the rain in Toronto, boos were heard from the stands.

Earlier on Tuesday, in the Norway vs Iraq match at Boston Stadium, similar reactions from spectators were seen during the first hydration break. Although the temperature was only 23 degrees Celsius at that time.
