Farzana Anny redefining visual storytelling in country's entertainment industry
As Bangladesh's film and OTT industry continues to raise its production standards, costume and look design is emerging as a vital element of visual storytelling. Among the creative professionals leading this transformation is Farzana Anny, whose work is drawing increasing recognition for bringing characters to life beyond the script.
Farzana recently earned praise for her look design in the Eid-released web series Cactus, where the distinct visual identities of Mehazabien Chowdhury, Arefin Jilani and Pritom's characters became a major talking point among viewers.
According to Farzana, the role of a look designer extends far beyond making actors appear stylish.
"The goal is to visually express a character's personality, emotions and lifestyle. Every costume, hairstyle, colour palette and accessory should help tell the story before a single dialogue is spoken," she said.
For Cactus, she developed individual mood boards for each character, blending gothic aesthetics, dark colour palettes, contemporary K-pop influences and modern fashion elements to create distinctive on-screen identities.
She noted that translating costume concepts to the screen requires close collaboration with directors, cinematographers, makeup artists and costume teams, as lighting, camera angles and colour grading often alter how outfits appear on screen.
Farzana's work has also earned industry recognition. She received Critics' Choice nominations at the Chorki Awards for Myself Allen Swapan and Overtrump in the Best Costume Designer category, and won the BIFA Awards 2025 for Best Costume Designer.
As the country's productions continue to invest in stronger visual narratives, creative professionals like Farzana Anny are helping redefine how stories are told—proving that some of the most powerful storytelling happens behind the camera.
