FIFA action against Barca over Álvarez
A major transfer storm has erupted in La Liga as Atlético Madrid prepare to file an official complaint with FIFA against Barcelona over an improper approach for Argentina forward Julián Álvarez.
Atlético accuse the Catalan giants of secretly negotiating with the 26-year-old striker, who remains under contract until 2030 with a massive €500 million release clause.
Tensions boiled over immediately after Argentina's 2-0 World Cup victory against Austria, where Álvarez publicly admitted his desire to leave Madrid to fulfill a dream. Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín fiercely criticized the timing of the player's comments, accusing Barcelona of a months-long campaign to unsettle the forward.
Despite the fierce legal threats, sports law experts note that Álvarez faces almost zero risk of a personal playing ban. Under standard regulations, players can theoretically face a four-month suspension for inducing a breach of contract, but such individual sporting sanctions are incredibly rare in modern football unless a player goes on strike.
Furthermore, because both clubs belong to the Spanish federation, FIFA may ultimately defer the dispute to domestic authorities, mirroring the 2019 Antoine Griezmann controversy which ended in a nominal fine rather than severe sporting bans.
The escalating legal battle will have no immediate impact on Álvarez’s eligibility for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. Formal sporting investigations take months to conclude, ensuring the striker remains fully cleared to play for Argentina as they defend their world title.
However, the exploding media circus presents a distinct psychological distraction for the national team camp, even as actual transfer negotiations between the two Spanish clubs are effectively frozen by the threat of litigation.
