FIFA had faced severe criticism after banning spectators from carrying water bottles into World Cup venues, with fans and world leaders accusing the governing body of prioritising profit over public health during the North American summer.

Following protests from supporters and world leaders, the organisation was forced to reverse its decision. In a notification on Friday night, June 5, FIFA announced that spectators will now be allowed to enter stadiums with a maximum 20-ounce (590ml) single-use soft plastic sealed bottle, considering the extreme heat.

However, the ban on carrying hard-shell reusable bottles will remain in place for security reasons.

Earlier, FIFA had banned water bottles from all 16 World Cup venues under the pretext of player safety. However, fans condemned the decision as a "money-making tactic" during the intense heat of June and July.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow were among those who strongly criticised the move, calling it a "horrible money-making scheme". Many said FIFA only cares about money.

The 23rd edition of the World Cup is set to begin on June 11 across three North American countries: the United States, Mexico and Canada.
