FIFA to discuss 64-team World Cup for 2030
FIFA will hold discussions on a proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams. After debuting a 48-team format at the 2026 tournament in North America, the governing body is exploring the possibility of an even larger event .
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, in an interview with Swiss media outlet Bluewin, said that the relevant committees would review the proposal following the current World Cup. He noted that while the 48-team format faced early criticism, this edition has been successful .
Infantino argued that the World Cup belongs to the entire world, not just Europe or South America, and more countries should be given the opportunity to participate. He believes that every nation has the right to dream of playing in the World Cup, and that including smaller nations would boost their interest and motivation to improve football standards, which are rising globally .
This expansion, if approved, would allow an additional 16 countries to compete in football's biggest tournament.
