Firefighter wins case against ex-girlfriend with ChatGPT's help
A firefighter in the United Kingdom has won a £40,000 case against his ex-girlfriend with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) as he could not afford a lawyer's fees. Craig Titchener, 40, represented himself in court. He took ChatGPT's help to understand the various stages of the legal process.
The incident began in 2019. That year, Craig won £200,000 in a lottery. Three years later, in 2022, he gave £40,000 to his then-girlfriend, 37-year-old Heather Douglas. Heather, a psychiatric nurse by profession, was given the responsibility of investing the money.
According to the agreement, Heather would use her financial knowledge to invest the money in premium bonds, and the profits from it would be shared between the two. However, their relationship later deteriorated. At one point, after the separation, Heather refused to return Craig's money.
Heather claimed that Craig had given her the £40,000 as a gift. She also brought allegations of harassment and controlling behaviour against Craig. On the other hand, Craig claimed that the money had been given for investment purposes and that he had the right to get it back.
As he could not afford a lawyer's fees, Craig ultimately decided to handle the case himself. At that time, he took ChatGPT's help to prepare the necessary court documents, fill out forms and gain an understanding of the various stages of the case. The case was heard at the Central London County Court.
At the hearing, Heather could not present any evidence in court in support of her claim that she had received the money as a gift. She did not even submit the relevant bank statements. Considering these matters, the court ruled in Craig's favour last week.
After the verdict, Craig said deciding to handle the case himself was risky for him. However, he has considerable doubt about whether he could have won the case without ChatGPT's help.
