Five arrested in top terrorist Mamun murder case
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested five people along with the weapons used in the murder of top terrorist Tarik Saif Mamun in Old Dhaka.
Among the arrestees are two hired shooters, Rubel and Ibrahim, who allegedly opened fire on Mamun, police said.
They were detained in a border area while attempting to flee to India.
Confirming the arrests on Tuesday night (November 12), DMP’s Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said two pistols used in the Sutrapur killing were recovered. A detailed briefing will be held at the DMP Media Center on Wednesday (November 13).
On Monday morning (November 10), Mamun was shot dead in front of the National Medical College Hospital in Sutrapur, Old Dhaka, shortly after returning from a court appearance. CCTV footage shows that at 10:53am, Mamun was running toward the hospital gate as two men fired multiple shots from behind before fleeing the scene.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared him dead. The inquest report revealed seven bullet wounds on his body — including injuries to his head, back, chest, and wrists.
According to police, the deceased Mamun was one of the top leaders of the notorious “Imon-Mamun group.” A long-standing feud over dominance in Dhaka’s criminal underworld existed between Mamun and another gangster, Imon.
Police suspect Mamun’s killing may also be linked to old enmity, as he was one of the key accused in the 1997 murder of Tipu, brother of infamous gangster Joseph.
