A laptop caught fire aboard an American Airlines flight from Atlanta to Dallas shortly before landing, injuring at least five passengers, according to media reports.

The incident took place on American Airlines Flight 2398 on Saturday (August 22), as the aircraft was approaching Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

The plane was carrying 133 passengers and crew members when smoke and flames were suddenly spotted in the rear section of the cabin, said in the report.

According to CBS News, the captain immediately alerted air traffic control after the fire was detected. Flight attendants quickly intervened and extinguished the flames, while the burning laptop was moved away from passengers to help prevent the situation from escalating.

The aircraft subsequently landed safely and proceeded directly to the gate, BBC reported. Airport medical personnel were waiting when the plane arrived. After initial assessment, one passenger who suffered burns received treatment at the scene and was released.

American Airlines praised the crew for their swift and professional response. In a statement, the airline said smoke was detected coming from a passenger's electronic device during the landing and credited the crew with managing the situation effectively and ensuring the aircraft landed safely.

The cause of the laptop fire has not been disclosed.
