At least 21 people have been killed in sudden flash floods triggered by more than an hour of torrential rainfall in Safi province of Morocco, a North African country. Another 32 people were injured, though most were released from hospital after receiving primary treatment, according to AFP.

The disaster struck Safi province, about 330 kilometres from the capital Rabat, on December 14. The worst impact was felt in Safi city, the provincial headquarters and a major tourist destination. So far, at least 70 houses and shops have been partially or completely destroyed by the floods.

Provincial government officials said rainfall began early Sunday but intensified sharply around noon, turning into torrential downpours. The rainfall, which lasted for a little over an hour, caused extensive damage.

Heavy rain and floodwaters severely damaged the road communication network, leaving Safi city virtually paralysed by massive traffic congestion for hours. The situation gradually improved in the evening as floodwaters began to recede.

Morocco, a country with predominantly arid weather, has been experiencing drought in many regions for nearly seven consecutive years. Against this backdrop, the sudden and devastating floods in Safi province have raised concerns across the country.

Hamza Soudani, 50, a resident of Safi city, told AFP, “I have never seen such heavy rainfall in this region. Today will remain a black day in our history.”
