Flight operations resume at 8 Indonesian airports after volcanic disruption

Eight airports in Indonesia, including the capital's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, have resumed operations from Tuesday morning after the intensity of the Anak Krakatau volcanic eruption significantly subsided, bringing relief to over 340,000 stranded passengers.

The confirmation came from Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation in a statement issued early Tuesday. The ministry also confirmed the resumption of flight operations at the airports through its X and Instagram accounts.

The Anak Krakatau volcano, located on an island in the Sunda Strait separating Java and Sumatra, became active on Saturday night (September 5). The eruption triggered frequent mild tremors across a vast area, including Jakarta, East Java, West Java and Sumatra. A massive amount of gas, lava and ash was ejected during the eruption, blanketing Jakarta and various other regions.

The Ministry of Transportation had suspended flight departures and landings at eight airports, including Soekarno-Hatta, from Sunday. Nearly 3,000 flights were cancelled due to the suspension. Most of the stranded passengers were booked on routes to Singapore, Doha, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur.
