Floods, landslides in China claim 17 lives, 33 missing
At least 17 people have been killed and 33 others are missing following heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides in southern China’s Gansu and Guangdong provinces, Chinese state media reported on Friday (August 8).
According to the China Meteorological Administration, 195 millimeters of rainfall was recorded between Thursday night and Friday morning across the affected regions. The torrential rains triggered landslides and severe flooding in Gansu's Yuzhong, Lanzhou, Linjia, and Baiyin counties, forcing the evacuation of over 4,000 residents from villages in Yuzhong’s Jinglong Mountains.
Power outages have been reported in several parts of northeastern Gansu, and landslides have blocked many roads, hampering rescue efforts.
In Guangdong, rescue teams recovered 14 bodies and saved seven survivors from a massive landslide that struck a village. Despite ongoing efforts, at least 33 people remain missing, with dozens of homes reported destroyed.
China has faced multiple monsoon-related disasters since mid-June, including last week's heavy rains and mudslides in Beijing, which claimed at least 30 lives.
