Flying with a baby: Essential tips for a smoother journey

Travelling by air with a baby can be challenging, but careful planning can make the journey far more comfortable for both the child and parents. From packing essentials to managing ear pressure and feeding, a few practical preparations can help avoid unnecessary stress during a flight.

Parents travelling with infants under one year should consider the child’s needs and, when possible, avoid unnecessary air travel. For essential journeys, checking the airline’s infant policies in advance is important. Some airlines offer bassinets for young babies who meet specific age and weight requirements, particularly on longer flights.

Keep diapers, wipes, feeding supplies, snacks, a change of clothes, a pacifier, medicines and a basic first-aid kit within easy reach rather than in checked luggage. Carrying extra clothes for both the baby and parent can also be useful in case of spills or accidents.

Parents travelling with newborns may find bulkhead seats convenient because they generally provide more legroom and may accommodate bassinets. However, availability and eligibility vary by airline, so these should be confirmed when booking.

Changes in cabin pressure during takeoff and landing can cause ear discomfort, especially for babies. Breastfeeding, bottle-feeding or allowing the baby to suck on a pacifier during these periods may help with pressure equalisation. Avoid putting cotton swabs or other objects into the child’s ears.

For longer journeys, a baby carrier or travel stroller can make moving through airports easier. Toddlers can be kept occupied with small toys, activity books or drawing materials. Parents should also carry sufficient breast milk, formula and age-appropriate food while following airport security and airline rules on liquids and baby supplies.
